I watched the first 15 minutes of the race on tv and I got goosebumps just thinking about being there!

I had my own rage run/ pity party of one this weekend. I attempted to fill my Chicago Marathon void with lots of running.

I think it helped.

Saturday's run was meant to be a medium distance shake-out run. I was aiming for about 10 miles. I got to my 5 mile turn around, and decided to keep going. The shake-out pace turned into a tempo pace.

13.1 miles

1:48:29

8:17/mile

When in doubt, run it out.

And run hard.

This shirt didn't hurt either.

This run was without fuel and only on 2 cups of coffee. This seemed like the appropriate sized smoothie when I got home.

I had a mile goal for today's run, but after running a quick solo half marathon yesterday, I wasn't sure what to expect. I left the house with a positive attitude. I somehow managed to convince myself that 18 miles isn't that far. Whatever you say brain.

The first 6 miles were relatively easy. I took my first Shotbloks at mile 5 and stopped for water at mile 4 and mile 6.

The second set of 6 were tough. My hamstrings were starting to feel the mileage. I took my Shotblocks at mile 10 and tried to settle into my pace.

The last 6 miles went by the fastest. I made my last water stop at my 12 and took my last Shotbloks at mile 15.
It is a sought after race due to its flat, fast course.

After finishing Chicago three times, I consider myself somewhat of a veteran to the course and it's quirks. Here are my favorite tips for running (and enjoying) the Chicago Marathon!

Get there early. Getting to Grant Park can take some time. It also takes longer to get inside the starting corrals since the heightened security following the Boston Marathon bombing. Once you're there, make your bathroom stop and warm up a little. The corrals get crowded quickly, so make sure you find your spot before you have to fight the masses.

Slow down! In my opinion, this is the most important piece of advice for this race. The race starts in Grant Park and runs through the Loop with insane amounts of spectators. The rush of adrenalin and the noise of the crowds can make you want to go faster than you had planned to. Remember: You still have 20+ miles to go!

Stop weaving in and out! This race is huge with 40,000+ runners. Yes, you will have people around you. The whole time. The first half of the race is jam-packed with runners. In my opinion, the second half of the Chicago Marathon is the best time to start passing people and going around slow runners. Just be sure to give them a heads up you're coming. I can't even count how many times I've bumped into or been bumped by others.

Look up and look around you! The city of Chicago is gorgeous with lots of unique architecture and sights to see (in my non-biased opinion :))

Follow this blue line. The city marks the shortest path to take on marathon day. How cool is that?

Be prepared for what I like to call the concrete jungle. Following Chinatown at mile 21, runners head through a less busy section of the city near highways. This section of the race can be mentally draining. For me, this is the section that I have to fight the urge to walk and to keep up my pace. Hang in there! Mile 25 puts you back on the path towards the Loop and almost at the finish line!

Ride the crowd and the loud cheers on Michigan Ave. towards the finish line. Hang tough for Chicago's only hill at Mile 26 (it's small, but feel massive when you've already finished 26 miles). Congrats! You have completed one the largest marathons and one of the World Marathon Majors!

I hope all the new Chicago Marathon runners fall in love with this race as much as I did. (but not too much love because I would like to get into the lottery next year, thank you very much)

For more good information regarding this race, this article is a great guide to what runners can expect at each mile of the marathon.
I'm onto the next race following the Fox Valley Half Marathon. I will be running the Naperville Half Marathon on November 8!

And now to yesterday's three part run.

We've had good running weather around here lately. I was able to leave work a little early and I got ready to run as soon as I got home. I flew through 8 miles. Isn't it funny how one day running can be miserable and the next it's effortless?

8.25 miles

1:07:39

8:12/mile

Part one of my run was easy breezy.

I got home, picked up Peyton, and I was off again for part 2. If I thought I was flying before, Peyton changed that perception.

3 miles

20:53

6:57/mile

Seriously? 3 sub-7 minute miles AFTER running 8 miles?

That little 20 pound dog is insanely fast. If anyone is looking to do some speedwork Peyton would love to join in.

Part three was my cool down (finally) thanks to Augie who, instead of running with Peyton's focus, chews on her leash instead.

And they are done for the night.

I took most of last week off of running. I was feeling burnt out and was very unhappy anytime I attempted to start a run. My exercise was walking the dogs and 14 miles total running for the week. The is my lowest weekly mileage since May following the Chicagoland Spring Marathon and I am absolutely ok with that!

My body needed a break so I took one.

This week I will be back at it starting with my favorite spin class and back and chest routine!
Off!! I was more than happy to take these days off following the Fox Valley Half Marathon. My legs definitely needed the break.

Thursday:
I finally felt ready to attempt some easy miles. This run was without music and no Garmin checking.

6 miles

52:47

8:47/mile

Friday:
A moderate run to wrap up my work week! This run was tough as my legs felt heavy.

5 miles

42:46

8:33/mile

Saturday:
Saturday was perfect weather wise and I was ready to put some mileage on my tired legs. It took 3 miles to get into a rhythm and to feel good. Post run I spent A LOT of time foam rolling and stretching to help alleviate some of the "heavy leg" feeling.

10 miles

1:26:38

8:39/mile

Rehydrating is the key to recovery. Or so my body thinks.

Sunday:
Off. I woke up with the intention to run long, but once I got dressed and started my Garmin, I decided to skip the workout and take another rest day.

We watched the Bears lose while the dogs kept my feet warm.

Augie wore her Bears shirt and was very disappointed by their performance.
She was also scared by the pumpkins in the background and spent a good 5 minutes barking at them. She let them know who's boss.
My Jake from State Farm khakis are not cutting it this year. Sitting on the floor, sitting on therapy balls, or sliding around on scooters (are you jealous of my job yet?) is not conducive to keeping clean pants. It's going to be jeans for me.
I'm enjoying these past three days off of running, but I'm starting to feel the itch to get back into it! I'm already looking forward to my long run this weekend!
There are three race distances to choose from: half marathon, 20 miler, and the full 26.2. Each race started at 7 am.

All three distances follow the same path for just over 7 miles before the 20 mile and marathon runners continue to head South. The course runs through some the the neighborhoods in Geneva, IL with the rest of the race following the Fox River.

Packet pick-up was held in St. Charles. I went after work on Friday and
got in and out within 5 minutes. They had a few tables set up for
runners to browse and shop. I skipped them in favor of beating traffic
home on a Friday afternoon.

It was a beautiful course with lots of shade. The running paths could be crowded at times (especially in the beginning) but as the racers split ways and people began to thin out, there was plenty of space to run comfortably without bumping elbows with others.

The race was very well organized with awesome volunteers! There were excited volunteers encouraging racers every step of the way. The volunteer at mile 12 was dancing. That made my day. There were loads of signs with arrows leading the way and I never felt confused. There were also volunteers at every turn directing you by saying "turn left" or "be careful, it's slippery!" I think the race was so well executed because of all the amazing people they had working it.

We arrived 30 minutes before race time and had some difficulty finding parking in downtown St. Charles. Chris dropped me off at the start and parked the car with my mom. I headed for my last bathroom break. The line was long, but there were many port-a-potties so it went quickly.

I had a major slip-up before the race even began. I left my timing chip on my kitchen counter. I had realized it was missing less than 15 minutes to race time while in line for the port-a-potties. Not the best time to not have an important piece of race equipment. I immediately went over to the help desk and explained to the worker my problem.. He was quick to respond and gave me another bib while writing down my information to change it in the system. It was a huge sigh of relief and I probably thanked him at least three times.
This was a race where I can say I felt good the entire time I was running. I allowed myself the first 5 miles to warm up. I focused on not getting caught up in the excitement of the start and going out too fast. My first miles were relatively consistent with my goal pace to be around 8:00/mile. By mile 6 I knew I was ready to crank up the speed. The next 4 miles flew by and I was hitting my paces consistently.
I saw Chris, my mom, and friends at Mile 10! Miles 11 and 12 I started to feel the distance but I was able to run sub-7:45/mile. I pushed the pace the last 1.1 miles finishing the race feeling really strong!
Crossing the finish line I was immediately stopped by a man who had passed me in the last mile and had finished just before me. He thanked me for setting the pace and stated he had been chasing me since I had passed him earlier in the race. What a confidence booster!

This race blew my last half marathon PR of 1:58:XX out of the water. I have only recently within the past year started to tolerate and improve on my speed, so I am excited to see how much faster I can get.

After the gym class studios being closed for maintenance and Labor Day, I was back at spin. This one was a tough 45 minute class and I was spin sore for a couple of days. I also did my favorite back workout prior to spin class. I am noticing a huge difference in my posture and overall fatigue not only while running but also when I'm sitting at work during the day.
Wednesday:
I aimed for about an hour of easy running today. I wanted to keep my legs loose and relaxed, but to still be able to take a longer effort. I added in a few strides throughout this run as well.
No running, but we did lots of fun things like walk around the farmer's market and sprints with the dogs. The best way to get rid of some of that puppy energy is by running around and having them chase after you. Of course, though, it's a sprint for you and me and a jog for them.

Sunday:
The Fox Valley Half Marathon!!! I've already mentally signed up for this race again next year. After forgetting my timing chip, I was able to get a replacement and I had a great race! It was definitely what I needed after being very disappointed in May. The race recap will be up (hopefully) tomorrow! I did pretty good running the tangents and fighting the urge to dive and weave around other runners. I only had .1 mile extra.
I Ran a Half Marathon This Morning. This race is officially on my favorites list.

Unofficial time was 1:43:06.

This was a massive 15 minute PR from my last race of 1:58:XX

And when I say unofficial it really is because I forgot my time chip this morning. After a brief panic I was able to get a new bib, but my time will not appear for 48-72 hours.

On my runner's legs, it was hard. When I graduated grad school and had a real person job, I bought a bike that actually fit me and biking became a little better, but it was definitely not my favorite.

Enter one of my BFFs, Katie. She gave me a free pass to join her at Lifetime and talked me into my first spin class.

It was love at first spin. (sight?)

The rest is history. My spin class on Monday nights is something I look forward to every week. For me, it is the perfect way to spend one of my days off from running.

Not only is spin class fun (the music is the best part), but it also can help your running!

Spinning can make you stronger without the impact! It is easier on the muscles and joints. You can make it a strength workout by adding on the resistance. Spinning also helps reduce your risk of injury as it works different muscles than running does. Working out these muscles can help decreased muscle imbalances and make you a better overall runner.

Spinning is a great interval workout that activates both slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle fibers. A typical spin class changes workouts by song. One song could work on low resistance and high speed, another could be rolling hills, and the next could be sprints. The constant changes in focus, speed and resistance makes me push and give it my all for that one song knowing a (very short) rest is coming up.

Spinning has been shown to improve 10K race times by 9% and 5K race times by 3%. Those numbers are huge! They could mean the difference between a PR or a near miss.

Recent studies have shown a correlation between foot cadence when running and pedal strike cadence while spinning. Higher pedal stroke may lead to a higher foot cadence. With your feet turning over faster, there is less time spent in contact with the ground and lower chance for injury.

Spin class also comes in handy when the weather is miserable. When it's rainy or cold and snowy, I don't feel guilty substituting a run for a tough spin class. Spin class (or riding my spin bike at home) always makes me feel like I'd had a good workout.
Thursday:
It took me until Thursday to really find time to run this week. That makes me sad, but then I think about the 90 degree heat turning into pouring rain and it's not that sad.

That is a good thing to remember for Sunday.

Sunday:
Sunday Runday! I wanted to get in one more long run before next weekend. Time was tight as I was finishing up the cooking and cleaning for our Bears season opener party, but I can just about always make time for running.

Running as a female is always an interesting experience between the honks and the catcalls. Today I ran into a competitive male runner that just did not want to be out run by a girl. He passed me at my fifth mile, which was all good by me. I needed to save my legs for 7 more miles. Just over a mile down the path, he was running slow uphill and I was closing in. We both had the same turnaround point and he noticed me closing in. He took off up the hill while I continued to maintain my pace. Another mile down the trail I had caught up to the point of me passing him and as soon as I did, he picked up his pace. I was tired of the cat and mouse chase so I picked up it for a while to get some distance between us. 10 minutes past by and here he was again. This time I let him go. He passed me again.... and he tripped and fell.

Seriously.

It took a lot of energy to hold it together and not burst out laughing.

I'd say he got what he deserved for his poor running etiquette.

Less than 6 days until the Fox Valley Marathon and I can't wait to run fast (for me)!
My day has been filled with cleaning, grocery shopping, heading to the farmer's market, and cooking.

First things first, today started with a 10 mile run.

It was a perfect 50 degree day which made this pace feel awesome. My pace felt easy and relaxed until about the 9th mile when my legs started to fatigue. And then the tenth felt good again. Very strange. I hoping next week is cool like today!

There was no spin class today because the gym was undergoing maintenance. I headed out for an easy 5 miles after dinner. It felt 20 degrees cooler near all the greenery on the trail.

Wednesday:
Today focused on strength training! I worked my way through p90x Arm and Shoulder workout while watching Orange is the New Black. I love the variety of this workout. I finished two sets of each exercise.

Thursday:
Off

Friday:
After feeling down about missing lots of running time due to the crazy early September heat wave here in Chicago, I dedicated myself to run after dinner on Friday. From the first step off my front stoop, this run felt good. My legs were ready to move and it was gorgeous running with the sun setting. I ran 9 miles on the trails before beating the sunset home. I picked up Peyton for the last mile around our neighborhood and Peyton was ready to run! My legs might have been near dead but Peyton wasn't having any of it. That last mile was 6:56. Yowza.
This run made my week. After feeling discouraged from not getting in many miles during the week, I was pumped after this run. Nothing beats the feeling of a good run!
I nailed a time trail for the Fox Valley Half Marathon! I also forgot to mention this is also my half marathon PR. A PR from a training run! I can't wait for September 20!
I work up determined to finish the long run that I had planned. Probably due to the fact that running has been at the bottom of the priority list lately.

I woke up, I drank only ONE cup of coffee (that's completely unheard of), and I was out the door.

With the Fox Valley Half Marathon two weeks away, my goal was to run 13.1 miles simulating as close to race pace as possible. While running the full distance around goal pace is not necessary (and frowned upon by some runners), this was the run that I needed today.

13.1 miles

1:44:26

7:58

This run was a huge confidence boost. I definitely struggled with pacing near the beginning and end, but it was refreshing to see sub-8 minutes miles again. I ran just above my goal pace but I was still encouraged by the paces I did hit. I am looking forward to the half on September 20 and knocking my goal pace out of the park!

I really need that shirt....

The rest of the today is being spent shopping, going out to Two Brother's Brewery for lunch, and hanging out with these two cuties:

Can you tell? I've hardly posted any exciting (to me) new run updates. It doesn't help that this week has been disgustingly hot. A whole week with temperatures at 90 or above does not make me a very happy runner.

One of my favorite ways to motivate myself into running is by reading my favorite running blogs and to read anything on Runners World.

That is how I found this article: 12 Habits of Highly Motivated Runners

I thought, "That used to be me! I used to be highly motivated! What were my secrets!?" After reading through the list, I found lots of habits that I had and even more that I didn't.

1. Become a Morning Runner

Habit: No. Definitely not. Even on the weekends I rarely run before 8 am.

Make it a Habit: Start with getting up early once or twice a week. Have your running clothes and supplies laid out the night before to you can grab and go. I also find that putting my alarm across the bedroom is a more effective way to wake up early. If I have to get up to turn off my alarm I'm more likely to stay up. Make a running date with a friend to encourage you to get out of bed earlier.

2. Strength Train Regularly

Habit: Sort of. I'm becoming more consistent with 1-2 lifting sessions a week.

Make it a Habit: Add strength training to your running plan. You wouldn't miss a run so why would you miss your strength training session? I like to do my strength training on cross training days or right after my runs.

3. Cross Train Regularly

Habit: Yes! I go to spin class once a week and I also do lots of walking with my dogs.

Make it a Habit: Just like strength training, add cross training to your training schedule. The best part of cross training is that it can be fun! Walk around the neighborhood with friends, family, or your pets. Bike while doing errands. Gym classes are my favorite ways to get in cross training.

4. Eat More Vegetables

Habit: I don't think I could possibly eat more vegetables than I already do.

Make it a Habit: I like to have veggies for snacks instead of chips or crackers. Carrots with salsa are one of my favorite go to snacks!

5. Warm up Before and Run and Stretch and Foam Roll After

Habit: Not really. My warm up is usually the first 1 or 2 miles of the run. I'm definitely inconsistent stretching and foam rolling after my run, though I feel way better when I do.

Make it a Habit: Adjust your schedule to allow for extra time to warm-up before a run. Dynamic stretches are the best way to do this! Following your workout, do your foam rolling and stretches while watching a show on your (if it's like mine) crowded DVR.

6. Unplug on the Run Once a Week

Habit: Occasionally. I aim for once a week. As I've been listening to podcasts more and more it has become my go to for runs.

Make it a Habit: Make one day a week your tech-free day. I like to run without music and without my focus on my Garmin during short, easy runs.

7. Cook at Home More Often

Habit: I cook at home Monday-Friday and usually Sunday. We definitely eat at home more often than out.

Make it a Habit: We make a meal list for the week on Sundays so I know ahead of time what I will be making. I also like to make new recipes which keeps on interest and can make cooking more fun!

8. Add a Weekly Long Run

Habit: Though I love my weekly long run, I have less motivation to do it when I'm not training for a race.

Make it a Habit: Running on different routes and trails helps keep long runs more exciting and less monotonous. Look at your calendar and keep an eye out for conflicts. If you have a cookout planned with friends for Sunday, Saturday may be your best day to fit in your long run.

9. Get Enough Sleep

Habit: 99% of the time yes. I am super crabby when I don't sleep enough. Chris can confirm this.

Make it a Habit: Turn off all electronics prior to beginning your bedroom routine. Their dim blue light can affect melatonin production! Find a bedtime that works for you (and that will allow you to get 7-8 hours of sleep) and stick to it! I go upstairs around 9:00 pm, get ready for bed, and read until I'm tired.

10. Apply Sunscreen Before Each Run

Habit: Yes! I apply a lotion daily with SPF in it. For longer runs on hot days I also spray on SPF 30 before running.

Make it a Habit: Make applying sunscreen part of your routine as you would with putting on your running clothes and shoes. PRO Tip: A great time to do this is while you're waiting for your Garmin to locate satellites. I set my watch outside to think while I am getting dressed.

11. Eat Breakfast Everyday

Habit: I would never miss breakfast. It's my favorite meal.

Make it a Habit: Have quick breakfasts idea ready to take on the go like oatmeal and fruit. I tend to make a smoothie every morning for breakfast. Have the smoothie ingredients pre-measured and frozen together in ziploc bags saves on morning prep time.

12. Sit Less

Habit: Yes! My job involves me standing and walking around more than half the workday. I am running around the school from classroom to classroom and from student to student with a few moments in between to document. When I get home from work I am on my feet cooking, cleaning, running, etc.

Make it a Habit: Make it a point during the day to take a walking break to the bathroom. Walk to someone's office instead of sending an email.

On and off pouring rain made it hard to sneak in a run. I did try, but made it less than a mile away from home before darting home to avoid getting drenched.

1.88 miles is not a long enough run for my endurance loving legs.

I sadly made the walk of doom downstairs to the treadmill, turned on an episode of Orange is the New Black, and turned the treadmill on.

It took almost a mile for my legs no longer felt like death and were accustomed to the treadmill belt.

One of my favorite ways to cure treadmill boredom (besides watching a "treadmill only" tv show) is to complete an interval pyramid workout.

This is a super flexible workout that can be changed to meet your needs! I vary this pyramid often but including different speeds and different interval lengths. It is my go to treadmill workout.

I continue to repeat the intervals until I have reached my goal mileage.

Saturday I ended up with 6 miles total (4.12 on the treadmill).

The rest of my gloomy, rainy Saturday was spent the best way possible. With puppy cuddles.
Between getting used to a whole new school, attempting to see all my kiddos (30+!) and TWO new evaluations, I'm exhausted. Is it fall break yet? ;)
Monday was my first day back at work after summer break and finding a good schedule was tough. I also experienced a lot of guilt when I couldn't or didn't run. I find it strange that when I'm not following a training schedule it's harder for me to miss runs.

This week my goal is to write in my schedule on an hourly planner so I can see where I have extra time to fit in a workout.

Monday:
Off. I took Augie for her last round of shots at the vet which made me miss spin. I was very sad about that one.

Tuesday:
I had planned to run to the track for some speed work, but that plan was cancelled by the band practicing on the entire field and track. Whomp whomp. I ended up with a to the track and back moderate run.

5.5 miles

47:26

8:33/mile

Wednesday:
Off

Thursday:
I took the pups to the dog park for an hour before I went for my run. Another easy, slow run as my body is still not digging the real work schedule.

5 miles

43:47

8:45/mile

Friday:
Off

Saturday:
14 miles!!!! I needed a long run and a long run was what I got. I definitely went into a flow during this run. I felt so good during the run that halfway I decided to run the second half at race pace.

14 miles

1:55:08

First Half: 8:25/mile Second Half: 8:01/mile

Sunday:

The forecast was for rain Sunday morning and I had planned to turn around if it became too bad. I ran this run easy and fought the urge to speed up. I got lucky and it didn't start to rain until 10 minutes after I got home!

9 miles

1:21:15

9:01/mile

My cousin passed away last Sunday morning and between the wake, funeral and our San Fransisco trip, there was barely time left for running.

I postponed my flight out until Thursday morning leaving 3 days to jam in as much San Fransisco as we could.

Thursday night we had tickets to see the Giants play the Nationals.

AT&T park is gorgeous and located on the water.

We also visited our friend's work where they had Happy Hour and Indian street food. How cool is that? He is able to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at work, and they also have a gym for the employees to use!

Friday we took a tour to Sonoma and Napa Valley. Our first stop was at the Golden Gate Bridge for pictures.

Our tour took us to two wineries in Sonoma and one in Napa.
Chris and I joined the wine club at Nicholson Ranch. We are anxiously awaiting our six bottle shipment coming in September!

I love wine.

Friday night we ate at the Franciscan Crab Restaurant.
We ordered a couple of appetizers and then split two crabs between three people. Whenever we are by the coast we like to eat the fresh and local seafood. Fresh seafood from the coast > Midwest Seafood.
Saturday we spent the day in Muir Woods hiking through the Redwoods.
When you're not able to run, hiking is the next best thing.

We arrived home yesterday around 6 pm and I fell asleep on the couch before 8 am. Apparently this past week really knocked me out.

Today was my first day back at school and the students return Wednesday! Seriously, where has the time gone?
How was your Monday?

Have you ever been to San Fransisco?

Back and tricep strengthening exercises followed by a 45 minute spin class. I wanted to keep my legs as fresh as possible for my track workout on Tuesday.

Tuesday:
Track Tuesday returned with 6 x 1 mile repeats. Honestly, I loved this workout. I was able to push my mile time knowing I'd have about 2 minutes to rest before doing it all over again. My warm-up and cool down rounded out the workout for 12 total miles.

Wednesday:
My legs felt good about the tough workout on Tuesday and I wanted a medium distance run. My goal for 8 miles and I ended up with 10.

10 miles

1:25:04

8:30/mile

Thursday:
Following car trouble in the morning (I'm apparently consuming lots of oil) I wanted something short and slow.

5 miles

44:32

8:54/mile

After my run I got my haircut and it's the shortest I've had my hair in about 3 years. I love it. The best part is no longer having long hair stick to the sweat on my back while running.

Friday:
Rest!

Saturday:
We went to the dog park in the morning meaning I ran later than I had planned. It was a warm and humid run, but luckily I fell into a rhythm and this run flew by.

8 miles

1:07:40

8:27/mile

Sunday:
A family emergency came up and my long run and all other workouts were scrapped.

Total miles: 35
Strength Training: 1
Spin: 1
