Weekly Mileage Round-up

My mileage definitely dropped this week from last week.

Monday:
My body was still feeling the effects of the wall painting and epic house cleaning so I rested today.

Tuesday:
I ran after work today and was not feeling the run.  I had orginally wanted to run 6-8 miles, but quickly into the run I shortened the distance.  I ran this run without music and did not focus on my Garmin. I tried to keep the pace at an easy run pace since my legs felt heavy.

4 miles
35:36
8:54/mile

Post run I lifted weights and focused on biceps, triceps, and shoulders.

Wednesday:
Wednesday was a little cooler and I was able to take Peyton for a run after work.  This run was a little slower than our usual pace. Peyton must have been planning on an "easy" (for her) run.

3 miles
23:08
7:42/mile

Thursday:
Rest day!

Friday:
I was super busy Friday so my workout was short and sweet. I took my mom to the doctor in the morning, and after a 5:30 am wake-up call I was pooped.  I ended up going for a 2 mile walk and made it home just before it started to pour.

Saturday:
My race was scheduled for 7:30 pm, so I had to do some planning regarding food and activity during the day. I went for a walk early on in the day and listened to Rich Roll's podcast.  He interviews different people across nutrition and endurance sports. He advocates for a plant-based diet and it is very interesting to me how many ultra runners and endurance athletes also adhere to this type of lifestyle.

The time came for the race and I warmed up and stretched prior to the run.  My race recap will be put up soon!

6.23 miles
47:53

Sunday:
I went for a shake-out run later than I had intended so it was already very hot. This forced me to really slow down and to run at an easy run pace.

5 miles
45:07
9:01/mile

Total mileage: 16 plus walks
Strength workouts: 1

Not the best week but my body was needing a break.  This week my goal is to get back into spin twice this week, strength training at least two times, and then a long run this weekend.

How was your weekend?

What are your goals this week?

What fruit have you been eating a lot of lately? (I'm going grocery shopping and looking for different fruits to snack on)

What I Made

Eating and running go hand in hand.  Lucky for me (and Chris), I enjoy cooking and we eat 95% of our meals at home.  I also love to try new recipes.  I'm a bit of a Pinterest addict and I am always searching for new delicious foods to try.

Monday I made Chris' favorite soup: Cowboy Potato Chowder

I make this soup about once per month and it always hits the spot.

I started making homemade broth about a year ago and haven't purchased store bought broth since.  Homemade broth is incredibly easy to make and tastes fantastic.  I had mine boiling the same time I started the soup.

Homemade broth has a gorgeous brown color.

Cooking is always better with wine.  And puppies.

We served our soup topped with bacon and cheddar cheese.  We had corn bread on the side.

I've been walking both the dogs at the same time.  It's madness.

Peyton decided to roll in coyote poop while walking today.  I threw her in the tub when we got home and scrubbed her. Dogs.

Yesterday I wasn't in the mood to run.  I had to wait until Chris got home to watch the dogs, so it was later than I was used to.  If I sit on the couch when I get home I almost immediately get tired.  I left the house thinking that I'd turn around if I wasn't feeling the run.  I ended up taking is really easy and focusing on my form.  I ended up running 6 miles.  I changed my route a little as well.  I'm a creature of habit and I like to run near my usual route.  Running away from it made me run feel even easier.  I should probably change it up more often.

6 miles
54:31
9:05/mile

Do you chance up your running route?

What is the favorite thing you've made this week?

Thursday Rambles

1. Augie has a UTI. Poor girl has been having it rough these past two days.

2.The two dogs have been getting along wonderfully. We've been making a point to spend time with each of them individually, especially Peyton.  We're trying to avoid any sort of jealousy.

3. We went to Benihana's for a friend's birthday on Tuesday and I ordered sushi.  Normally I get one of their dinners cooked on the hot grill, but sushi sounded amazing.  This was the Wow Sushi and it was fantastic.  Each one had different toppings but were each stuffed with crab meat.

4.  Blackhawks won Game 4 and the series is tied! Chris and I are considering spending a whole month's mortgage on Game 6 tickets at the United Center.  Something tells me that is not the best idea since I am working only 2 days a week now.

(source)

5. THERE IS A HARRY POTTER PREQUEL?!?!? This is the most important thing that has happened in my life (since I got married last October of course).  Eddie Radmayne is set to star in it.

In other news..... I've finally started running consistently again.  We've been having some beautiful weather here, making me want to spend a lot time outside.

Tuesday I was able to get 10 miles in the morning.

10 miles
1:20:40

Today I got a shorter run in before taking Augie to the vet.

6 miles
49:37

Peyton has been loving it too and we've been going for a lot of walks together.

On top of the running and walking, I've been going to random spin classes and trying to keep up with my strength training. Apparently I really like to exercise.

What are you doing today?

Are you watching the Stanley Cup Finals?

What's Been Happening: A New Puppy!!

It's very strange not posting since Wednesday, but things have been crazy in my household!

Meet Augie.

She is a 2 month old lab mix.

That face.

She seems to be very smart and wants to learn, but puppies are always getting into something.  And we have to take her outside every 30 minutes.  We've been up every morning between 5 and 5:30 and she is full of energy.  I'm exhausted.  I was so glad to get to work yesterday at my acute rehab facility.

Fortunately, her and Peyton have been getting along great.  Chris and I have a huge sigh of relief the first day they played together.

There has been very little running lately.  Peyton and I went out for a few short runs early in the week, and I was also able to get in 7 miles Thursday morning.  We are working on crate training Augie, so hopefully this week I'll get in more miles.

Without running, my workouts have been 45 minute spin classes and long walks on the trails with Peyton.

Having a new puppy in the house is like having a new baby (me saying this while never having had a child), and my meals have been as sporadic as my running.  I've even been skipping meals, and that is definitely not like me! I like to eat constantly! Simple meals have been my best bet despite wanting to try out new recipes.  I'm trying to be conscious of not eating out as much, and using what we already have in the house.  I ended up making my own version of Chiptole's Burrito Bowl and it was reaaaalllyyyy good!

Chicken taco meat in the crockpot, black beans, lettuce, shredded cheese, avocado, and greek yogurt all over a baked sweet potato.  Delicious!

Today we are having our Sunday night family dinner so they can meet our Augie.  Hamburgers on the grill and these Salted Caramel Butter Bars are making an appearance! Make them.  You can't go wrong (and you also can't stop eating them).

Have a great Sunday!

What's for dinner at your house tonight?

What do you order at Chiptole?

Thursday Rambles

1. I got the best gift yesterday from a student.  Panera and candy? Those are my kinds of eats.

2. On that note, there are only THREE DAYS left of school.  I have my summer to-do list ready, including painting the house, getting the carpets clean and actual fun things like running and a couple of vacations.

3. This 92 year old woman is running her 16th marathon this weekend. She ran her first marathon when she was 76!! She runs for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and has raised over $100.000!  She is incredible.

4. We're going to look at another dog tomorrow.  I don't want to get my hopes up, but fingers crossed that the meet and greet goes well!

5.I am STILL sore from Tuesday.

6. Watching playoff hockey gives me heart palpitations. Ok not really, but last night's game really had my heart racing.  I can't wait for game 7 Saturday!

7. This was Peyton's progression of excitement during last night's game:

8. I am officially employed for next school year.  I am currently a contract staff so my employment is never guaranteed.

What is happened on your Thursday?
Are you watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Thursday Rambles

1.       I am so far behind on my Runner’s World reading.  The most current magazine I am on is from September 2014. Oops.  I guess that is what summer break will be for.

2.        The weather for Sunday does not look good.  Currently, there is an 80% chance of rain.  My fingers are crossed that the rain will come after 11 am. Thank goodness Runner's Recipes just posted some great tips about running in the rain!

3.       I have had to skip lunch twice this week because I have been so busy.  The end of the year is meeting after meeting while trying to fit in all my treatment time with kids.  Skipping lunch is very unlike me.

4. Did you know that only 0.5% of the US population has run a marathon?  Of that 0.5%, about a quarter will run sub-4.

5.These potato chips from Costco are incredible.  Seriously.  They are sea salt and black pepper, but also have garlic powder and jalepeno powder listed as ingredients.  They have a small kick from the jalepenos (though mostly because I ate about 30 of them) and taste a little bit like sour cream and onion chips.

6. Speaking of chips, I like to put tortilla chips on my salad. I love the crunch and the saltiness.  Am I the only one that does this?

7. These.

8. Peyton is creeping on us while we get ready in the morning.

9. Pete B. made this awesome pace band. I am totally stealing his idea and making one for Sunday. Best part is that it will be waterproof with the use of the tape!

10. Because I have not run as much this week as I normally do, yesterday was the only day I have washed my hair.  Dry shampoo has been a god send and I am so happy to have time saved in the morning!

11. Peyton is such a little lady crossing her legs.

Ok. So that was mostly about food.  Apparently I'm very hungry lately.

Today Peyton and I did my second to last run before race day.

4 miles
32:39
8:10/mile

We spent a lot of time running on the grass to save her feet and my legs were very happy with that.  I love running with my sweet little running dog, but I think tomorrow I will go by myself and shoot for 9 minute miles.  I can easily get caught up in her enthusiasm and run faster than I had planned.

Tell me something about your Thursday!

What are you favorite potato chips?

My Marathon Goals

I can’t believe there is less than a week until the Chicagoland Spring Marathon!  This past week has allowed me to reflect on my goals for this upcoming race and what I ultimately want my goal pace to be.  This is something I have been thinking about for a while, and some of you have asked about it.

Looking back on my 22 mile run that was an “easy” 8:22/mile and my 20 mile race pace run at 7:55 average pace, I’m revising my goals to be a BQ.

Holy shit I can’t believe I just typed that.

I feel like just saying it out loud I’m going to jinx it.

While I am not a superstitious person, this might just make me pull out my lucky rabbit’s foot and tie it onto my shoe laces.

This is not a new thought that has recently popped into my head.  I’ve had the goal of running Boston for a while.  Over the past year as my mile times decreased and as I’ve gained the endurance to maintain a faster mile pace, the idea of a BQ has been growing larger and more prominent in the back of my mind.

The only uncertainity that is throwing me off is the fact that I haven’t run the marathon distance in 2.5 years.  And my PR is only 4:02:03.  I have yet to break the 4 hour mark.  I don’t know if I’m crazy thinking I can get a 30 minute PR, but I really do think I can.

So now that that is out there… My goal pace for the run will be around an 8 minute mile.  Knowing that it takes me 2 to 3 miles to really warm up and for my legs to start turning over comfortably, an 8 minutes mile goal pace will give me enough wiggle room.

Here goes nothing.  I am aiming for a BQ on May 17. Bring out the lucky rabbit’s feet.

Today's run was my last race pace tune-up run.  My legs felt rested after having two days off of running.

7 miles
55:19
7:54/mile

It was, again, too easy to go faster than race pace, so I will need to keep an eye on my pace for the first few miles of the marathon to avoid burn out later on.

After my run Peyton and I went for a long walk and I let her off leash again.  It was a gorgeous day and it was perfect for being outside.

Do you have any races you are training for?

What did you do outside today?

Thursday Ramblings

1. Looking at this list is giving me major race envy.

2. I am working on getting all the grocery shopping done for mother’s day on Sunday.  Chris and I are hosting both our mom’s at our house and I want it to be really nice for both of them!

3.  The schools I am in are counting down the final days by using the alphabet.  Today is “I.” Summer break is SO close!

4. On that note, I am so happy I changed jobs when I did.  I almost have a position lined up for next school year as well! Whoop whoop!

5. I went to bed at 9 pm yesterday.  I was really tired.

6. I really like drinks.

Especially drinks in purple containers.

7.  I already have pretty rad runner’s tan lines.  I tried switching my Garmin to my other wrist during my walk yesterday to help even out my watch tan line.

8. We are joining the pool this year.  Memorial Day cannot come soon enough! A date with a comfy pool chair, the sun, and a book is calling my name.

9. Peyton woke me up by laying her head on my neck and licking my chest.  Aren't dogs just the best?  Though it's probably pay back for making her do things like this:

It was hilarious at the time.

10. I am loving Dead Wake by Erik Larson.  His books are fantastic.  He has a wonderful way to writing non-fiction that is easily read, informative, yet not excessive.

So I said Tuesday was my last speed work day. I was wrong.  Today I officially wrapped it up with my final set of hill sprints!

4 miles easy
34:22
8:35/mile

10 x 10 seconds hill sprints
done on treadmill 12% incline, 9.3 mph

It was not difficult to take the run easy today as the high was in the upper 80s today.

I'm getting a little worried about the state of running shoes.  They have a number of miles of them already and they are starting to feel like they are ready to retire.  With less than a week and a half to go, I'm not sure if it's smart to changes shoes at this time.  I'm thinking I will start breaking my new shoes in and just see how they feel next week.

Do you dress up your dog?

How many miles do you get out of your running shoes?

What good book have you read recently?

12 Signs You Should Run a Marathon

Today is a day off from running and thank goodness for that! Is anyone else really tired? I’ve been exhausted all week.  Normally I am ready to start my week on Monday morning.  This week, however, I have been hoping for the weekend since I woke up Monday.  Yikes.

Peyton and I went out for a long walk to enjoy the nice weather we've been having.  I let her off leash in the areas of the trail where there were no people around.  She did a great job and always came back when called.  She must be maturing in her old age of 2.

I found this great article while I was at work today titled 12 Signs You're the Kind of Person That Should Run a Marathon Regardless of How Far You've Run Before. Anything that starts off with stating that all runners have a certain level of insanity has my attention.  The 12 signs are:

1. You are perfectly happy hanging out by yourself.
 YES.

2. You are inherently patient

3. You are competitive, but mostly with yourself

4. You are not easily intimidated

5. You aren’t afraid of exploring strange places

6. You are not emotionally attached to your toenails
Ok, well may not emotionally attached...

7. You are a forward thinker

8. You consider weather a challenge, not a deterrent
When you live in the Chicago area, you have to.

9. You’re a little bit of a masochist

10. You’ve always got a little bit more in the tank after a run

11. You enjoy running for running’s sake

12. You can make it past the first mile
Which is truly always the hardest part.

Anything you would add to that list?

What did you do outdoors today?

What is for dinner? (I'm hungry and don't know what to make...)

Back to Normal and Foam Rolling After a Run

I'm starting to feel back to normal after last week's stomach issues.  I started to keep on eye more on what I was eating to avoid any more GI discomfort.

My rest days for my marathon training switched this week from Monday to Wednesday, so Monday was 5 easy miles with Peyton.

5 miles with Peyton
36:52
7:22/mile

We took a lot of rest breaks yesterday during our run to allow Peyton to rest and catch her breath.  It was warmer than she was used to so every mile and a half or so we stopped and I gave her some water.

Yesterday I made one of my all time favorite recipes:  Cinnamon Crumb Banana Bread

My excellent photography skills....

If you are a fan of banana bread, definitely give this recipe a try!

Today's run:

8.14 miles
2 miles easy, 2 x 10 minutes at half marathon pace with 2 minutes active recovery, 3 miles easy
1:03:07

My legs felt surprisingly fresh for today's run.  The 2 x 10 minute pace was 6:59 and 6:50 respectively.  This workout was officially my last speed session for this training cycle

This week I am turning my focus to stretching and using my foam roller after each run.

Using a foam roller can help prevent injury, promote recovery, and act as a deep tissue massage.   This post has 6 foam rolling exercises to complete after your run to increase circulation and promote recovery.  I tend to foam roll my IT band, quads, and piriformis primarily as these are the tightest on me.  It is recommended to foam roll before stretching as it acts to "prime the muscles."

I think between foam rolling, stretching, lots of rest, and healthy eating will help me to be as prepared and as healthy as possible in 12 days to rock my marathon!

Why You Should Taper Before a Marathon

I am officially in my taper.

I'll admit it.  I LOVE when I finally get to the taper.  At this point in time my body is tired and ready to turn down the mileage.

Tapering is important because it allows your body to be as rested as possible so you can perform at your maximum potential.  You should not only cut back on the mileage, but also the intensity of your workouts.  Your easy runs should be taken at a much more conservative pace.

Your marathon training plan should begin to taper three weeks before your goal race.  Your mileage should decrease by 10-15% that first week.  Two weeks out, your mileage should go down by 25-30%.  Your final week of tapering should be focused on getting enough rest.  Your daily runs should also decrease by 50% of your normal volume.

For many runners tapering can be difficult because of the fear of gaining weight and losing fitness.  However, your body will no longer make physiological changes to training. These adaptions take six weeks to effect your training, so high intensity workouts will not improve your performance.

During the taper you want to be sure to include specific workouts.  Short, speed oriented runs are not going to affect your marathon.  You should, however, try to include moderate distance runs (think 8-10 miles) at marathon pace to help you hone in on your pacing.  My marathon training plan includes 1-2 workouts at marathon pace a week and removes all other speed work.  The rest of my 3 runs during the week are run easy.

Your taper should not only be about reducing your mileage.  Tapering should also include focusing on increasing your sleep, planning out your race day, finalizing any travel plans, hydrating, and your nutrition (source).  Your calorie intake should be cut to account for your reduced mileage.  You should increase your carbohydrate and fat intake during your taper to help restore glycogen levels.  It is also recommended you remove cross training from the final two-three weeks of marathon training.

The hardest part of the taper for me is the mind games.  I start to worry about competing at my race, especially when I get comfortable with the reduced mileage.  With all the stress relief from my high mileage weeks, my nerves start to show.  Part of tapering should also include mental preparation.  What will you do if the weather is miserable?  Your previous injury starts to at up or you have side stitches during the race.  Preparation for race day during your taper will help to reduce and race day anxieties you start to feel.  I like to spend more time reading and taking Peyton for walks during my newly found free time.  It helps me keep my mind off of my impeding marathon and helps to decrease race anxieties.

Most of all, enjoy it!  You've made it this far and you've completed the bulk of your training.  Now it's time to rest and get ready for what is going to be a great race day!

Yesterday was beautiful day here in Chicago.  Chris, Peyton, and I went to my mom's house to enjoy her backyard.  Peyton loves having the freedom to run and sniff as she pleases.  My mom also has a dog that Peyton likes to run around with.

I am TWO WEEKS away from my marathon!  Today's run was really challenging, but helped to reinforce and solidify that I am ready for my race.

18 miles
2 miles easy, 14 @ marathon pace + 20 seconds per mile, 2 miles easy
2:27:43
8:12/mile average

The miles at marathon pace averaged around 8:05-8:10 per mile.  Those easy miles were run really easy.  My final two miles were around a 9 minute mile pace.

How was your weekend?

Do you like or dislike to taper?

Happy Birthday Peyton and Friday's Run

Today Peyton is celebrating her second birthday.

Since day one, owning a dog has been a huge learning experience.

Don't bite off more than you can chew.

Take extra rest when needed.

Apologize when you're in the wrong.

And above all, live life and love to the fullest everyday.

Peyton will be celebrating today by taking extra naps, getting extra treats, and running with her friends at the dog park.

Yesterday I finished off my day with upper body strengthening.  I think weight lifting had helped make me a stronger runner than I was without lifting weights.

Today was a non-attendance day for the students.  I had a professional development course to attend and I was out of work by noon. Talk about the best way to start the weekend!

I saved my run for the middle of the day so I could practice running in some heat.  Today's high was 69 and it was one of the warmest days of the year so far.

6 miles
46:46
The last 4 miles of this run were a moderate pace: 7:31, 7:34, 7:37, 7:37

I definitely noticed a difference with the warmer weather.  With my marathon in May you never know what the temperature may be like when we're running.  I'm trying my best to get myself as ready as I can for this race! I'm really looking forward to it!

Tomorrow is my rest day and it's supposed to be gorgeous outside.  78 and sunny.  We will be sure to do lots of outdoors activities!

ps. I fixed all the broken picture links from previous posts.  Sorry about that....

What are your plans for Saturday?

Do you run before or after work?
